Australia is home to dramatic scenery, unique flora and fauna, the Great Barrier Reef, outback deserts, rainforests, beautiful cities, and some of the nicest and most generous people we have ever met.
Sydney and New South Wales
Sydney is in the state of New South Wales which is along the East coast. Sydney is home to sites such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Botanical Gardens, and great shopping and nightlife. A cruise along the harbor is a must as the city is beautiful from the water. Visiting areas such as the Rocks District, Circular Quay, Darling Harbor, and Manley Beach allow travelers to partake in city life that is uniquely Australian. Outside of Sydney the Blue Mountains and wine regions like the Hunter Valley are easy day or weekend trips.
New South Wales has much more to offer than just Sydney. A one hour flight inland from Sydney yields the outback and Burrawang West Station. Burrawang is a working cattle ranch and sheep shearing station with a number of activities and indigenous flora and fauna. A flight north of Sydney takes travelers to the unique town of Byron Bay and the UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana rainforests.
Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef
Queensland is the state most associated with the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane is the largest city in Queensland and other cities such as the Gold Coast and Cairns are popular spots. Housing the largest coral reef system in the World off its shores, Queensland is a perfect spot to explore the Great Barrier Reef. With World-class resorts and islands such as Lizard Island, Bedarra Island, qualia, Double Island, and Haggerstone Island; it is no wonder that the Great Barrier Reef features on so many visits to Australia.
South Australia, Kangaroo Island, and the Wine Country
The capital of South Australia is the lovely city Adelaide. Known for great food and wine Adelaide is a great place to explore before heading off deeper into South Australia. The wine regions of the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Mclaren Vale, and the Coonawarra are all within easy reach of Adelaide, making this a must stop for wine lovers.

Inland from Adelaide one quickly realizes why this is the driest state in the driest continent on Earth as outback scenery dominates the landscape. The Flinders Ranges is a chain of small mountains that runs through the outback and this beautiful area is highlighted by a stay at Angorichina station, a working sheep station in the outback with gracious hosts.
Northern Territory and the Top End
The Northern Territory is home to the capital city of Darwin. Darwin’s unique personality is best captured by experiencing it. A visit to Darwin is not complete without walking through to the Mindil Beach markets and eating fresh mud crabs and Barramundi.
Outside of Darwin is some of the most remote and dramatically beautiful scenery in all of Australia. Outback locations such as Bullo River and El Questro (just over the border in Western Australia) provide some of the same landscape as in the recent ‘Australia’ movie. Ancient aboriginal rock art, isolated waterfalls, crocodiles, large escarpments, and billabongs dot this wonderful area. Coastal locations such as Faraway Bay, also just over the border in Western Ausralia, provide more aboriginal rock art, King George Falls (one of the most beautiful places in all of Australia), and stunning views.
Further into the outback and in the middle of the red center of the country is a large sandstone rock formation known as Uluru. Formerly known as Ayers Rock, the site is sacred to the local aboriginal people and thus the aboriginal name of Uluru has been adopted. The area is rich in cultural aboriginal history and tours of the sacred site are best done from a stay at Longitude 131.
Melbourne and Victoria
Victoria is home to the cosmopolitan city of Melbourne. Shopping, dining, and, sightseeing are excellent activities in Melbourne. Visiting areas such as St. Kilda, Chapel Street, and the Southbank of the Yarra River are great ways to experience Melbourne. Outside of Melbourne, travelers can explore the Great Ocean Road, numerous top surf sites, and further inland one can even find snow-capped mountains.
Tasmania
Tasmania is an island located roughly 150 miles south of the eastern coast of Australia and is known for its natural beauty. The unspoiled and varied terrain has everything from waterfalls, Cradle Mountain, national parks such as Freycinet, and tons of hiking trails as the island has not been heavily developed and is a great place to explore.
Western Australia
Western Australia occupies the western third of Australia. The capital, Perth, is actually closer to Indonesia than it is to its own country's capital, Canberra. Perth and surrounding areas like Fremantle offer a wide range of activities and exploration. Wine regions in Western Australia produce some of the finest wines in the country. Remote areas along the coast such as Broome and areas near the top end of Australia have beautiful beaches, scenery, and are far from commercially developed tourist destinations allowing for a much more authentic and relaxed travel experience.
As Australia is south of the equator, the seasons are opposite of Northern hemisphere locations. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth are all warm/hot from November through March. Fall and spring see more moderate temperatures, while winter sees the coolest time of year. Winter is still very moderate in these cities and while there might be a little bit of rain; often it is clear and sunny.
The top of Australia in areas like Darwin get hot and humid during the summer months and afternoon thunder showers are not uncommon. The winter is a great time to visit the top end as it is still warm/hot but without humidity or rain.
As the Great Barrier Reef is so large, depending on where you are along the reef at a given time of year determines what the weather might be like. There are almost always spots that are great at given time of year along the Reef.
Flights from Los Angeles arrive into Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. There are nonstop flights from San Francisco to Australia. There are a number of cities in Asia that have flights to Australia. There are also flights from New Zealand, the South Pacific, South Africa, and South America.
Airlines such as Qantas, United, American, and Air New Zealand fly from the U.S. to Australia (Air New Zealand flights stop in New Zealand).
There are a tremendous amount of excursions while in Australia. Wildlife tours such as kangaroo, koala, and additional indigenous flora and fauna can be done from many locations. Kangaroo Island is known as the Galapagos of Australia for all the unique plants, animals, and scenery.
Private excursions to dramatic scenery, special sections of national parks, Uluru (Ayers Rock), and stunning waterfalls allow for access to some truly special places. Mustering cattle on a cattle station, learning about shearing sheep on a sheep station, exploring ancient aboriginal rock art, fishing for the elusive barramundi, and scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef are amazing and fun experiences that are greatly enhanced by the humor and knowledge of our Australian guides.
Australia is one of the most urbanized populations in the World. Most people live in or near a city and most people live on or near the coast. While settled by Europeans, aboriginal people have inhabited the land since the Ice Age days. A fusion of European, Asian, Middle East, and Aboriginal influences have created diverse cities and friendly and fun people.
