Traveling with Kids

Apr-17-2012 By Justin

As a parent of two beautiful young girls I can vouch for the joy (and also the heartache) traveling with kids can bring. It is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable experiences being at the airport and seeing your children, noses pressed against the window, saying “daddy, daddy, plane, plane”.

On the other side of the coin there are the unforgiving, ‘death glares’, from those travelers around you when your 15 month old decides that she wants to simply cry uncontrollably and despite trying every parenting trick known to man nothing seems to work. At this point you wonder whether staying at home was the better option.

I am lucky enough to be in the fortunate situation where I do get to travel with my family but I also still travel on my own giving me a unique insight into both sides of the equation.

For traveling with kids the best advice I can possibly give is ‘planning and preparation’ closely followed by lots and lots of candy.

The planning and preparation begins well before you even get close to getting on a plane. From a parent’s perspective, I understand it is often the flights which occupy most of our thoughts. “How will the kids behave?”, “Will they sleep?” “What if they scream?” are all valid concerns but when it is all said and done we really have no control over any of these things. Thankfully though, what we do have control over, is where we stay. Choosing the right resort is often the making or the breaking of a trip. Whilst a 12 hour flight can seem like a long time with a child who won’t sleep, a 7 or 10 night stay at the wrong type of resort can be a disaster. Linara Travel can certainly help you in selecting the right type of resort. Toddlers through to teenagers can enjoy wonderful vacations (and so can their parents) when you allow us to guide you to the right resorts for you and your families individual interests, desires and dreams.

Whilst it may seem like a daunting task taking children to destinations like the Maldives, Seychelles or Dubai there are many great resorts that cater exceptionally well for families. Some of the best family trips I have planned have included Zighy Bay in Oman or a few nights at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel or the Atlantis in Dubai followed by a weeklong stay in the Maldives at Soneva Fushi, Anantara Dhigu, Lily Beach or Shangri La. Add the newly opened Niyama resort to the list and there are a number of great options. Many of the resorts offer great discounts for families. Some have free accommodation and meals for children sharing with their parents or for the older kids heavily discounted ‘second rooms’ are often also available. Just let us know what your family dynamic is and we can find some great resorts to suit.

Below are some examples of some great family room options:

Linara Travel can assist you with planning a fabulous family vacation to any of our wonderful destinations. We can make the planning easy rather than a chore and we can ensure that every aspect of your trip is taken care of.

My final word goes out to all those people who are not traveling with children – “Yes, we know our child is crying. Yes, we know you are likely getting annoyed because of it. Please understand we are not having them cry just to annoy you. Quite the contrary, we are doing everything we know of to stop them, believe me.” A little patience and a little understanding make us as parents feel much calmer and as a result we are often able to get our child settled quicker. The ‘death glare’ simply doesn’t help.

Until next time, safe travels

Justin
